To create sound reinforcement systems for 74 meeting spaces in a state-of-the-art hotel, meeting and convention facility that would satisfy the exacting standards of the Marriott Corporation and the City of Norfolk. The systems had to be technologically sophisticated, yet simple enough to be operated by anyone.

The Solution

AE Systems designed and installed complete sound systems, including amplifiers, speakers, microphones and supporting equipment for all public areas of the hotel and convention facility. Areas of coverage included three large ballrooms - the Marriott, Tidewater and Norfolk, as well as numerous smaller breakout rooms that could be combined as needed. All rooms were provided with automatic gain microphone mixing, which eliminates the need for an operator. The ballrooms were equipped with computerized combining maps, which allows the many sound systems to be adjusted and merged for any room configuration at the touch of a button.

Because the hotel and its events were expected to attract media attention, accessibility for remote broadcast by outside crews was designed into the facility. AE Systems installed a video link to the roof of the building that is capable of providing simultaneous microwave transmission for broadcast by up to four television stations. All ballrooms also have video and audio links to the loading docks to accommodate media crews.

The facility's many public spaces required localized sound reinforcement. The Grand Lobby, the second floor Fireplace Lounge, The Dining Room, and Stormy's Pub all received the individual attention to detail necessary to make them unique and comfortable areas, easily maintained by hotel personnel.
