The airport announce and paging systems had to be clear and reliable. Noise levels would be in constant flux internally with passenger activity and externally with tarmac and runway sounds. People had to hear at all times, no matter what sound interference they might encounter.

The Solution

The function and dependability necessary in this project called for the most advanced audio announce system available. AE Systems designed that system using Innovative Electronic Design (IED) technology. All systems are computer controlled.

There are several special features of this sound system. There was a potential problem of someone attempting to make a building-wide page at the same time another person was making a local page. This was solved by digitally recording the building-wide page and playing it back when the local announcement terminates. Priorities can be assigned to any location through this computer.

Noise problems are controlled by using ambient-sensing microphones throughout the facility. They automatically adjust the volume of the sound system according to the level of the surrounding noises.

Constant computerized monitoring checks are performed on the system to verify that all equipment is functioning properly. Any discrepancies are immediately reported. This monitoring, handled by the computer in seconds, would take two people several days to complete.
