The Challenge

Several years ago, Floyd County Public Schools approached AE Systems about incorporating technology into their district. The small, rural district in southwest Virginia wanted to use technology to improve their educational processes. Their desire for technology-rich schools was strong, and all that was missing was the planning, the infrastructure, and the hardware to get from "here to there."

The Solution

Working in partnership with the Superintendent and Director of Instruction, AE Systems designed a five-year plan to incorporate technology into all of the five schools in the district.

For the first phase, an electrical renovation project provided the opportunity for installation of a voice, data, and video infrastructure. This was followed by the installation of hardware for basic video distribution, local area networking, and internal communications systems.

Working with another of the districtís business partners, Citizens Telephone Cooperative, the internal communications systems was soon expanded to incorporate external (telephone) communications as well.

The next phase included the installation of the Rauland Ranger Media Management System at Floyd High School, along with media retrieval systems at the four elementary schools.

During the course of the installation, the Ranger Media Management System was expanded from the High School to also serve Floyd Elementary School. Future phases will expand the video distribution systems at Indian Valley Elementary, Willis Elementary, and Check Elementary to include full Media Management Capabilities.

The constantly evolving technology plan is a result of a true partnership between Floyd County Schools, AE Systems, and the district's other business partners. With everyone working together, monitoring the budget, and evaluating changing requirements, Floyd County Schools has become one of the first districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia to have complete voice, data, and video capability in every classroom in the district.
